Career Development Training for Individual Artists
Local Arts Agencies Partner to Present NYFA Fundraising Presentations & Artist Workshops for Triangle Artists
The Durham Arts Council is pleased to host New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Program Officer for Fiscal Sponsor Programs Rory Golden who will present three training opportunities for individual artists at the Durham Arts Council building (120 Morris St., downtown Durham) between July 23 and July 29, 2010. On July 24th Mr. Golden will conduct The Independent Artist, a one-day professional development workshop for artists across disciplines. On July 23 and 29, Mr. Golden will offer Doctor’s Hours on the Road, one-on-one consultations, and on July 29, Mr. Golden will offer a free two-hour lecture on Fundraising Tools for Artists, outlining the services provided by NYFA. Registration for The Independent Artist is available on-line at the Durham Arts Council's website at www.durhamarts.org. The training is presented in partnership with the Durham Arts Council, The Durham Art Guild, The Town of Chapel Hill Office of Public Art, the Orange County Arts Commission and the Chatham County Arts Council.
An engaging and passionate instructor, Golden notes, “As a professional artist and arts administrator, I want artists of all disciplines to know that NYFA is here to support them regardless of where they live.” The partner agencies are pleased to work together to give local artists in-depth knowledge of NYFA’s resources. Golden will deliver Independent Artist, a day-long workshop for artists across disciplines. The inspiring course delivers practical information through short lectures, hands-on activities and individual coaching, including sessions on individual self-assessment, goal-setting/vision work; writing and speaking about your creative work; budget writing, income streams & fundraising strategies; elements of a proposal. DOCTOR’S HOURS ON THE ROAD: ONE ON ONE CONSULTATIONS

For artists seeking individual coaching, Rory will be available for short one-on-one consultation sessions with artists across disciplines. The 20-minute sessions are for individuals and are confidential; however, creative collaborators are welcome. The fee is $20. Registration is on-line at

ABOUT “FUNDRAISING TOOLS FOR ARTISTS” PRESENTATION
Thursday July 29th, 6 – 8PM
Golden’s presentation will be an overview of NYFA support programs for artists across disciplines available nationally and will include information on two of NYFA’s programs:
NYFA Source www.nyfa.org/source is the most extensive national online directory of awards, services, and programs for artists. Listings include over 4,200 arts organizations, 2,900 award programs, 4,200 service programs, and 900 publications for individual artists across the country. More program listings are added every day.
Fiscal Sponsorship www.nyfa.org/level2.asp?id=2&fid=10 Fiscal Sponsorship is a critical way for individual artists, artists' collaborative projects, and emerging arts organizations in all disciplines to apply for funding usually available only to organizations with 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. The right fiscal sponsor will allow you to manage your project efficiently. Other NYFA Programs such as NYFA Source Hotline for artists will also be discussed.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Rory Golden brings strong experience in supporting artists and an active artist’s professional practice to his position at NFYA. As Executive Director at the Center for Book Arts (2000 - 2004) in New York, Rory established various new programs to support artists. These include a new exhibition series, a letterpress broadsides poetry reading series, a workspace artist-in-residence program for emerging artists, and a tuition-free class for emerging writers. Before coming to NYFA Golden was part-time Studio Manager at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio.
Rory has exhibited his artwork widely in both solo and group shows at venues such as Eyedrum and the Spruill Gallery in Atlanta, the Denver International Airport and both the San Francisco and New York Public Libraries. His work has been recognized with fellowships from Yaddo, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Blue Mountain Center and the National Academy of Fine Arts. Recent grants include an Idea Capital Grant, a Puffin Foundation Grant and a recent research grant from Duke University Libraries Special Collections. His work was recently featured in Art Papers magazine’s 11th annual art auction and will be seen in solo shows in two upcoming group shows in New York City.
